Description:

A tribute to free jazz legend trumpet player Don Cherry by the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble led by spiritual jazz master Kahlil El Zabar. Coincidentally, it is also the last work in which Don's son, pianist David Ornette Cherry, who passed away suddenly last November, participated. Other musicians on the album include legendary L.A. vocalist Dwight Tribble, young Corey Wilkes (Tp), and Alex Harding (Sax), who perform a tense, improvised version of a tribute to Don Cherry. Kahlil El Zabar was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1953 and grew up on the South Side as one of three children. After high school, he attended Kennedy-King University. Later, he also studied at Malcolm X University and other schools. Interested in drumming and percussion, he attended the University of Ghana in 1973, where he studied African music. 18 years old, he joined the AACM, a musical organization of avant-garde black musicians, and became its chairman in 1975. At the same time, he formed the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and the Ritual Trio.Starting with "Three Gentlemen From Chikago" in 1981 and "The Ritual" in 1986, respectively, the group has consistently released dozens of albums to date. His original African spiritual jazz has been highly acclaimed, and he has performed with many well-known artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, and Pharaoh Sanders. Coincidentally, his son, David Ornette Cherry, passed away suddenly at the age of 64, shortly after recording "Spirit Gatherer," a tribute album to Don Cherry, and performing with this group in London.
