Description:
[The Mahler cycle is one of the most successful recordings of Mahler's complete works by David Zinman and the Zurich Tonehalle. Zinman's confidence, based on his many years of studying Mahler's autographs and his daring to perform Mahler's complete works in Rotterdam and Baltimore, is organically combined with the tradition of Mahler performance at the Tonehalle, resulting in a truly 21st century Mahler image. By placing the violins in opposing positions and objectively adhering to the composer's detailed instructions written into the score, the sound image Mahler envisioned has been elaborately constructed. Reflecting the latest revision results of the complete works edition, the third movement made a big splash when it was performed and recorded with the obbligato horn part treated as a soloist-like part, standing aside from the conductor. This is the first appearance of the artist/title in the series. ◇Blu-spec CD2 / Year of recording: April 17-19, 2007 / Location: Tonhalle, Zurich
