Description:
The first live recording of the Cleveland Orchestra's performance in Europe in 1957. The tour started on May 7 in Antwerp, Belgium, and lasted 41 days. The tour was a great success, fulfilling its original purpose of bringing the essence of European music to Europe by an American orchestra. The second half of the tour was a spirited live performance in Lugano, Switzerland. Hats off and admire Schumann's stickwork, which transforms all the contradictions and compositional irrationalities of Schumann's works-"full of energy and yet profound, gloomy and yet open, contemplative and yet clear"-into charms. The "Sea" was also a masterful performance, edgy, sharp, and brilliant. The encore, "Racozzi March," was a sensual frenzy that the audience and I enjoyed together. The sound quality is excellent to begin with, and we have reissued the recording on UHQCD with as much of the tape damage corrected as possible, eliminating the odd stereo effect. It comes with a newly written article by up-and-coming journalist Nestor Castiglione (English + Japanese translation).
