While this bone is generally too large to wear as a ring, people have been tempted to try for centuries, whenever these are found along dry river beds in arid mountain regions. They are the only known example of a double eye socket, an eye-within-an-eye. While its evolutionary function was protective, the additional orbit had the side effect of allowing its owner, an arid- climate ancestor of the Japanese giant river salamander, to literally look inward.
