Toshio Hosokawa (1955-), who studied composition in Germany under Yun Isang, Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber, is a leading contemporary Japanese composer whose works are based on traditional Japanese culture and music and their aesthetic and spiritual foundations. The second volume of the concerto collection for solo instruments on Neos features the Cello Concerto (commissioned by the Suntory Music Foundation), in which cellist Rohan de Saram, formerly of the Arditti String Quartet, gives an impressive solo performance; "Journey" for trumpet solo and strings, the seventh in the "Journey" series, now in its tenth edition; and the "Concerto for Strings", which is the second concerto in the series, and which was performed by the Lucerne International Music Festival in 2000.
