Hobbymaster - 1/48 N2S-3 Stearman 39123 US Navy 1944

The Stearman Aircraft Company produced a bi-plane trainer-aircraft called the Model 70. In 1935 the USN ordered the Model 70 with a Wright J-5 Whirlwind engine designated the NS-1. Boeing Aircraft Company bought Stearman and gave the Model 70 a Lycoming R-680-5 radial engine making it a Model 75. In 1936 the U.S. Army Air Corps placed an order for the Model 75 and designated it PT-13. With a Continental R-670-5 engine it became the PT-17. The RCAF labeled it PT-27 Kaydet with Kaydet becoming the universally accepted name.

The Stearman Aircraft Company became a subsidiary of Boeing in 1934 with more than 10,600 built in the 1930s and 1940s. These aircraft became a primary trainer for both the USAAF and USN. The USAAF labeled the aircraft the PT-13 and PT-17 while the USN called it the NS-1 and N2S. The Stearman was commonly called the “Yellow Peril” referring to the bright yellow paint used on the majority of these aircraft. This Stearman was Bu.No 39123/73 and one of the 1,875 delivered to the USN.
