Rattle presents Beethoven's only oratorio "Christ on the Mount of Olives" on the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth Beethoven's only oratorio "Christ on the Mount of Olives". Rattle & the London Symphony Orchestra's live recording of a performance in early 2020 of the work depicting the capture of Christ in prayer after the Last Supper. 1802, Beethoven said goodbye to his own wanderings with the "Heiligenstadt Testament" and began a new life of composition with his brilliant Second Symphony. The following year, 1803, Beethoven took up residence on the second floor of the Theater an der Wien, where he was to receive a great deal of stimulation from the theater community. His oratorio in German, "Christ on the Mount of Olives," is one of a series of such works. The part of Christ talking about death reminds one of the "Heiligenstadt Testament," but the main focus of the music is rather the dramatic elements of his pursuit, arrest, and crucifixion by the soldiers, The music shares some similarities with "Fidelio," which Rattle began writing the following year.
