It is a passenger ship of superlatives. At 150,000 GRT, the Queen Mary 2 of the Cunard Line is the largest, longest (345 m), highest (at 72 m it is higher than the Statue of Liberty) and most magnificent passenger ship ever built. On 14 stylishly and luxuriously furnished passenger decks there is room for up to 2,620 passengers, with an additional 1,253 crew. With it's long and elegant hull and powerful propulsion (max. 29 knots) it was specially designed for transatlantic voyages, from Europe (Southampton, England) to North America (New York) in 6 days. The concept for the Queen Mary 2 was born in May 1998, after a further two years of development, the contract was awarded to a French shipyard in November 2000 and the ship was handed over to the Cunard Line on 22 December 2003. Only after spending the winter in the Caribbean did the ship commence regular transatlantic service in April 2004. The Queen Mary 2 continues the tradition of the great North Atlantic voyages and thus contributes to the continuation of the era of ocean voyages, which has already been declared to be over.
