The Caliber Armor CaliberX™ is a Level IIIA / HG2 soft body armor insert manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky, using a hybrid layup of UHMWPE and para-aramid fibers. Tested and verified to meet or exceed ballistic resistance under NIJ Standard-0101.06 Level IIIA and NIJ Standard-0101.07 HG2, the CaliberX delivers 10% less weight and 15% less back-face deformation than other commercially available soft armor systems of comparable areal density. The result is a 1 lb-per-square-foot panel that stops high-performance handgun rounds — including the .44 Magnum, .357 SIG, and 9mm — across consistent, uniform multi-hit performance. Custom sizing is available for backpack, briefcase, and larger-bag applications.
The CaliberX is rated Level IIIA under legacy NIJ Standard-0101.06 and HG2 under the updated NIJ Standard-0101.07 — the two most current benchmarks for handgun-rated soft armor. At this rating the panel stops high-performance handgun rounds including the .44 Magnum, .357 SIG, and 9mm. Like all soft body armor at this threat level, the CaliberX does not stop rifle rounds. For rifle-rated protection, a hard armor plate is required.
The hybrid UHMWPE and para-aramid layup hits the 1 lb-per-square-foot areal density benchmark while coming in 10% lighter than comparable commercially available soft armor systems. The material construction also improves flexibility compared to single-fiber designs, which Caliber Armor attributes directly to faster response time in a critical situation. The fiber blend absorbs bullet energy along individual fiber molecules, catching the projectile in a multi-layer web that disperses impact energy progressively through the stack — the final inner layers reduce the energy transfer that causes back-face deformation. The thinner, lighter profile makes this insert practical under a jacket, inside a vest carrier, or seated flat inside a bag's laptop compartment.
For full care, use, and fitting instructions, download the CaliberX Soft Armor Panels Care, Use, & Fitting Guide available on the product page. Soft armor panels should never be machine washed or machine dried. Store flat, away from prolonged UV exposure, moisture, and high heat. Inspect the panel regularly for deformation, puncture, or damage to the outer cover — any panel showing signs of impact or structural compromise should be removed from service immediately.
The CaliberX rectangle panel ships in a standard rectangular format suited for plate carrier soft-armor pockets, standalone soft armor carriers, and bag inserts. Caliber Armor has verified fitment in the 11x14 configuration for the ETronic Backpack and the Jansport laptop compartment. The flexible, low-profile construction allows the panel to lay flat against the back or torso without bunching. For non-standard carrier dimensions or custom-cut requirements, contact us to discuss sizing options.
The CaliberX cannot be shipped to New York or Connecticut due to state body armor restrictions. It is subject to US export regulations (EAR/ITAR), and export outside the US without proper authorization is prohibited. Under 18 U.S.C. § 931, anyone with a federal felony conviction for a crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing or possessing body armor.
Level IIIA is the legacy threat designation under NIJ Standard-0101.06 and HG2 is the equivalent designation under the updated NIJ Standard-0101.07. Both describe handgun-rated soft armor tested against the same class of high-performance handgun threats. The CaliberX meets or exceeds both standards, so it is current regardless of which designation your application references.
No. Level IIIA / HG2 soft armor is rated for handgun threats only. It stops rounds including the .44 Magnum, .357 SIG, and 9mm, but it will not stop rifle-caliber projectiles. If rifle-rated protection is required, a hard armor plate at Level III, III+, or IV must be added to the system.
Do not machine wash or machine dry soft armor panels. Refer to the CaliberX Care, Use, & Fitting Guide for specific maintenance instructions. Improper laundering can degrade the ballistic fiber structure and compromise the panel's protective performance.
Yes. Caliber Armor has verified the CaliberX in the 11x14 size for the ETronic Backpack and the Jansport laptop compartment. The flexible rectangle format also fits a range of briefcases and larger bags. Contact us about custom sizing if your bag's dimensions fall outside the standard rectangle format.
It depends on the application. The CaliberX is a bare insert designed to be placed inside a soft armor carrier, tactical vest, or a bag's ballistic compartment. It does not include a carrier. For body-worn use, a compatible soft armor carrier or plate carrier with a soft armor backer pocket is required.
