Kamasi Washington's First Film Score "Becoming" to be Released on CD! Kamasi Washington, one of the leading saxophonists and composers in the jazz scene, has released his first film score, "Becoming," on a long-awaited CD. The album features 15 songs, including new songs written for the documentary film about former First Lady Michelle Obama directed by Nadia Halgren, which was released on NETFLIX in May 2020, as well as re-recorded past songs. Kamasi wrote and produced all of the songs, and is joined by familiar faces from Next Step, including Ryan Porter, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Tony Austin, and his father Ricky Washington, as well as trumpeters D'Angelo, Jill Scott, and Lauryn Hill. In addition, trumpeter Dontay Winslow, who has backed D'Angelo, Jill Scott, and Lauryn Hill, New York contemporary improviser Sean Sandaregger, and L.A.'s own Kenneth Crouch have participated in the recording.The title track "Becoming," a light mellow song clothed in fresh exuberance, the ballad "Song For Fraser," with its gentle saxophone brooding against an all too indulgent piano, and "I Am Becoming," which is a refreshingly fresh performance of West Coast jazz with simple themes and melodies that shimmer beautifully, while remaining close to the screen.
