“Sixteen years ago, the first edition of this book was hailed as the finest contribution to our knowledge of the Australian Aborigines since Spencer and Gillen’s famous volumes were published.  In the meantime, much research has been carried out, the greater part by Professor Elkin and members of the Department of Anthropology in the University of Sydney.  Indeed, the research from the University has been continuous.
This edition, which is over a third larger than the earlier edition, takes stock of the established results of new research.  The first chapter dealing with the origin and distribution of the Aborigines has been largely rewritten, and the second chapter and others critically revised and enlarged.”
