Messiaen, Olivier (1908-1992)
Description:
Messiaen is unique among 20th century composers, and his unique musical language has greatly influenced the next generation of composers. His devotion to Catholicism, his subtle Oriental sound, and above all, his attachment to the sounds of the natural world, including birdsong. These have been the hallmarks of Messiaen's music since the beginning of his career. Of the two organ pieces on this album, "The Body of Glory" is one of Messiaen's favorites, and the figures symbolizing the "Trinity" in the Bible are hidden in the piece, depicting the "battle against death and rejoicing" in every expression. Ten years later, "Mass at Pentecost" is a work that he is said to have written based on an improvisation he performed at Sainte-Trinité Church in his youth. It is a colorful and mystical piece that is rich in improvisational phrases, ancient Greek rhythms, and the birdsong he loved so much. Naxos Japan
