Description:

The latest in the series focusing on Fabrique, the live music venue in Hamburg that is twinned with "Onkel Poe's Carnegie Hall"! This work was recorded by Pharaoh Sanders, who passed away at the end of September 2022 at the age of 81, with his quartet on June 6, 1980. It was one of the earliest recordings in Fabrique, still called the "New Jazz Festival" at the time, and was part of the fifth summit of German, European, and American musicians. He was touring Europe at the time, exploring new avenues, including adding songs from the "Great American Songbook" to his repertoire, while continuing his explorations around African culture over time. In this recording, it can be seen that he is returning more to "Africa" and "Straight Ahead," while still retaining his "free jazz" influences. On drums is Idris Muhammad, a New Orleans native with deep roots in the soul and rhythm-and-blues scene. On bass is Curtis Landy, who was only 25 years old at the time and has since established himself as a composer, arranger, and bass soloist. The piano is played by John Hicks, one of the most popular accompanists of the time, who played with Art Blakey's "Jazz Messengers".
