Four violin concertos by Christian Ferras (1933-1982) in his twenties. All of them showcase the fresh, beautiful sound and vigorous playing of the young Ferras. Ferras was a favorite of such greats as Karl Böhm and Herbert von Karajan, but he is a great match for the Stuttgart virtuoso Müller-Kreis, who played both Beethoven in 1954 and Tchaikovsky in 1957 with great feeling and energy. He is a very good partner for Müller-Kreis. In the third movement of the Tchaikovsky, Müller-Kraai's free and unrestrained violin was exquisitely received by Ferras, and the performance was thrilling. On the other hand, in the 1959 Brahms concert in Hamburg, Feras played slowly and on a grand scale with a neat orchestra conducted by the Hamburg maestro Schmidt-Isserstedt. Ferras' beautiful sound in the second movement is superb. Ferras probably never made a commercial recording of Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1. This performance in Frankfurt has only appeared once on a pirate CD, making it a treasured recording for Ferras aficionados.Ferras' lush tone enriches the work while vividly enhancing the modernism of Prokofiev's Paris period.
