The Heraldic Knight Tapestry depicts the beauty and pageantry of heraldic designs which allowed them to survive the gradual abandonment of armour on the battlefield during the seventeenth century. Heraldry came into existence in the early 12th Century when knights started wearing armour. In the case of full battle armour, identification of knights was difficult. Therefore, devices started to be put onto the knights shield and surcoats, hence the description "coat of arms" which is derived from the use on surcoats.

In modern times, heraldry is used by individuals, public and private organizations, corporations, cities, towns, and regions to symbolize their heritage, achievements, and aspirations.
