Description:
A duet by Yuki Hyakutake and Masaharu Karita, a leading Japanese viola and cello player. They masterfully play both baroque and contemporary music styles with mature technique. A string duo at its finest, to be passed on to the next generation. The four 20th century viola and cello duets are performed in chronological order of composition: Couperin, a French Baroque composer, and Cherubette, an Italian cellist and composer active in London. Hindemith, a German composer who was forced into exile due to Nazi oppression; Shull, a Jew who was interned by the Nazis in the Terezin concentration camp and died of pulmonary tuberculosis; Piston, an American composer who served in the military during World War I and II; and Lutoslawski, a Pole who He had participated in the resistance movement against the Nazis. Although these four pieces were composed by composers from various countries over an 18-year period between 1934 and 1952 (Lutoslawski's work is an arrangement of a piano piece composed in 1952 and arranged in 1962), they share a common World War II background and a common coloring.
