Salzburg Festival 2009 "Opening Concert" Arnoncourt's 80th Anniversary ConcertFilm of the Vienna Philharmonic's opening concert at the Salzburg Festival in July 2009. This concert also marked the 80th birthday of the maestro Arnoncourt. The main piece was Schubert's "The Great". The performance was full of Arnoncourt's clear melodic lines and determined rhythms. Schubert's "Six German Dances," arranged by Webern, was a mixture of the two composers' sensibilities and had a very sweet sound. Arnoncourt skillfully manipulates deep tones and transparent sounds to create musical interest. The three Joseph Strauss pieces were performed with elegance, portraying Joseph's characteristic serenity and refinement. The supreme sound produced by the combination of Arnoncourt and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Arnoncourt's passionate conducting that belies his age make for an impressive performance.
