This collaboration between Italeri and Platz brings us the F-14A Tomcat in 1/48 scale! Making its first flight in 1970, the F-14 Tomcat was put into operation in 1974, and was active as the main carrier-capable fighter of the U.S. Navy until its retirement in 2006. Developed with the main role of fleet defense, it carries long-range air-to-air missiles, AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, short-range air-to-air missiles, and AIM to respond to threats to the fleet such as enemy vessels. It's also equipped with Sidewinders and an M61 Vulcan cannon. It carries AN/AWG-9 radar which is indispensable for the operation of AIM-54; it's capable of tracking up to 24 targets at the same time from a distance of about 160km, and can attack six targets simultaneously. The main feature of the Tomcat is its variable wing, with a receding angle movable between 20 degrees and 68 degrees. It demonstrated high STOL performance, and also performed admirably at high speed.
