Description:

Rattle & LSO's latest disc in the 150th anniversary year of Berlioz's death, Faust's Eternal Punishment, a large-format vocal work by Rattle & LSO. Rattle & LSO's vocal works include Debussy's "Pelléas et Mélisande," which won the 2018 Record Academy Award Bronze Prize and was highly acclaimed for its highly accomplished performance. This time Rattle releases to the world "Faust's Eternal Punishment," performed in 2017 for the 150th anniversary year of Berlioz's death. Selling his soul to the devil until he finally finds salvation... This dramatic work was written by Berlioz, who was smitten by Goethe's great work "Faust". Berlioz's "Faust's Eternal Punishment" was born out of Berlioz's obsession with Goethe's "Faust. Faust, once a righteous scholar, sells his soul to the devil and drags even the innocents around him to despair and death. The story is at once a tragedy and a dark comedy, a play and an epic, centered on a character who is both wise and vile. As Rattle said: "This is a tribute to the orchestra and to Colin Davis. My generation all learned Berlioz from Colin Davis and the LSO. And as a quirky kid who frequented the music library where my sister worked, Berlioz's papers were my bible. We tend to forget how Faust began so early, but Beethoven died soon after writing his first sketches. The originality of that sketch is still very appealing today. In the movement where Mephistopheles sings, the strings sound like a giant guitar, but the notes are written in such a way that everyone wants to hear exactly this sound at that moment, and all the other pages are written in that tone! Where does this come from? How did he know that the orchestra could do this? I can only assume that this is already anticipating the film." King International
