Esther Phillips' live performance took place in November 1978, the year before the Freddie Hubbard disc. The stage from this date is included on two CDs. In 1972, Esther left Atlantic, where she had many hits, for KUDU, where she continued to produce masterpieces backed by a soulful yet sophisticated sound, before moving on to Mercury in 1977. In this performance from her Mercury days, Esther's original earthy and groovy vocals are on full display, and she also captivates the audience with "Love is a Different Thing," a song from the Dinah Washington repertoire that was a big influence on Esther and became a big hit for her. Esther's style, which is a more earthy and soulful version of Dinah and her influences such as Nancy Wilson and Marina Shaw, can only be fully appreciated in a live performance. This CD, which delights listeners with its versatile repertoire, is also full of the charm that only a live performance can offer.She passed away in 1984 at the young age of 49 and did not leave behind a sufficient number of recordings, so this discovery was a welcome gift for her fans.
