Description:

[Kemp Masterpieces 1000] Wilhelm Kemp (1895-1991) was a German pianist who excelled at classical and romantic repertoire such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Bach. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of his death, an encore pressing of the "Kemp Masterpieces 1000" series. Kemp recorded this concerto recording during his prime years, and it is one of his most representative concerto recordings from this period. Unlike the mentally shunned performance on the stereo disc with Leitner recorded in his later years, here we hear Kemp at his peak in the 1950s, when he was at the peak of his vigor in all aspects. Kemp's piano of this period, where every note is vibrant, has a power in its music that is not present in his later years. The same can be said for the complete piano sonatas recorded around the same time, and these monaural recordings are no less brilliant than their stereo counterparts. In addition, they are backed by the now legendary conductor Paul van Kempen and the Furtwängler-era Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Here is a performance of the last great master's period. [Performed by] Wilhelm Kemp (piano), Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Conductor: Paul van Kempen Recorded: May 1953 in Berlin (monaural)
