The twin of this spectacular dress walked the runway for the Fall 2017 Chanel show and Sofia Boutella wore one for a premiere that season. Karl repeated variations of this look throughout the show and one of those versions was a part of the 2023 Metropolitan Museum Exhibition, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" giving it a wonderful of amount provenance. I love having the reference photos and video for you so you can see how gorgeous this is once on the body.
No matter how good you think this is on a dress form, it is spectacular in real life. The thing about Chanel is that they make some of the very best fabrics in the world and this dress is made out of a really special one. It is a classic Chanel tweed done in black and then that has hundreds of thousands of various sized sequins woven through the weave. The entire base of the dress is covered in some of the smallest sequins I have ever seen, and then more in different sizes are layered on top of that. Most of the sequins are black, but he also wove in little pops of red and blue, silver and green. These catch the light and it is just spectacular. I don't think any label does ready-to-wear at this level as far as fabric goes better than Chanel does. This is a fabric that you would expect to see in a Couture piece. Everything about this dress has that chic Chanel feel that makes many of Karl's designs feel like forever classics. It is beautiful in person and the simple lines and cut make it the kind of dress that you can wear multiple times, while the styling and accessories you choose to add can make it feel different each time. The neckline is set wide and there is a wide ivory silk collar that circles around the neck, standing up to frame the face. The collar is fully detachable so you instantly have two dresses in one. The dress is sleeveless and cut to skim over the bust. The waist is shaped and brought in through vertical seaming and from there, it skims over the hips and widens out to the hem. A slit runs up the front so that you show a little leg when you walk. Depending on your height, this should fall about mid-calf or ankle. The final perfect touch are two top set pockets that sit on each hip and wrap around the hips slightly. A little Chanel plaque with a purposely distressed finish and the double C logo sits on one pocket. It is an exceptional piece of Chanel. Excellent condition
Fully lined in a black Chanel embossed silk and closes with a hidden set zipper at the back. The collar is detachable and buttons into place along the inner edge of the neckline with little Chanel embossed buttons. The pockets are functional. Tagged a Chanel 38. It appears to have been worn very little if at all.
