It was the time of the year when people gathered patchouli in the countryside around the city. The merchant had offered to accompany me to the harvest fields. It was the best hour to go, he told me proudly. Back in the present, in my homeland, the horses set off like lightning around the circular track of Piazza del Campo, spurred on by the jockeys who performed acrobatics to stay put on the saddles.
