Summer’s Sunday circle of drums and dancers is a quintessential Washington institution. It started as a community gathering to rise awareness about blackness, amid the assassination of Malcom X in 1965 (whose name is often associated to the park itself). Their loud spirit has been keeping the beat for more than 50 years, and it also has been an indicator of the gentrification process of the once called Chocolate City.

About the artist:

Carlos Carmonamedina studied Fine Arts in Mexico and Romania. His artwork, which combines his love for travel, bicycles, food, old cameras and comics has been featured in many exhibitions around the world.

After living in Europe for 7 years, he is now settled in Washington DC, where he works as an illustrator and graphic designer.
