👸 C1889 Victorian Oil Portrait – Lady with Cherry Lips in Blue Dress by George Percy Jacomb-Hood

🖼️ Subject & Medium

Presenting a captivating original oil on panel portrait, titled:
"A Portrait of a Young Lady Wearing a Blue Dress with White Collar", painted in 1889 by British artist George Percy Jacomb-Hood (1857–1929).

This exquisite late 19th-century Victorian portrait depicts a beautiful young woman, shown in half-length frontal profile, gazing lovingly at the viewer. She wears a traditional blue dress with a soft white ruff frilly collar, her thick brown hair, blue eyes, and cherry lips giving her an air of youthful grace. Her rosy cheeks and elegant poise bring a romantic softness to this period work.

🎨 Composition & Technique

This portrait exudes refined Victorian elegance, capturing the sitter at a moment of serene introspection. She is presented in three-quarter view, her gaze softly engaging the viewer, conveying both grace and quiet confidence. Her blue dress, a symbol of poise and respectability, is rendered in deep, soft tones with delicate attention to the folds of fabric, creating a beautiful sense of depth and movement.

The crisp white ruffled collar frames her face and adds a touch of regality—its fine lace-like edges painted with care and subtle tonal variation. Her cherry lips, rosy cheeks, and blue eyes are infused with lifelike warmth, while her soft brown hair is styled with volume, cascading naturally with rich detail that reflects light.

The background is intentionally understated in a muted, neutral tone, a hallmark of portraiture from the period. This allows the viewer’s focus to remain entirely on the subject’s expression and dress, enhancing the intimate, almost poetic atmosphere of the work.

The artist’s technique blends classical realism with romantic softness, typical of late 19th-century British portraiture. Subtle highlights and shadow modeling bring out the sitter’s delicate facial structure, while the smooth transitions between tones in the skin suggest academic training and technical mastery.
