This is a classic Penny Red postage stamp of the United Kingdom, issued between 1858 and 1879, distinguished by its corner letters ("A–F" in this example). It depicts the profile of Queen Victoria, engraved by Charles Heath and based on the original design of William Wyon. Unlike the earlier imperforate Penny Reds, this issue is perforated and features individually engraved plate numbers in the side margins, introduced to combat forgery and assist postal accounting. The heavy black numeral cancellation "918" further highlights its postal use during the Victorian era. The Penny Red replaced the famous Penny Black and remained a cornerstone of British philately, with numerous collectible varieties depending on plate numbers, shades, and cancellations.
