Ancestor figures played and still do play a central role in the lives of the Nias people, the Ono Niha. Such figures are believed to house the spirits of a households dead ancestors and provide a link between the living and supernatural world.

This is an exceptionally large example, dating from around the early to mid 20th century, in hardwood with a glossy black patina. The figure sits on a stool and is holding a betal cup in its hands, a sign of welcome. The crown represents the gold crowns that are worn at feasts of merit.
