I believe the A. Legoff who signed the back of this painting and dated in 1908 was Amelia Legoff, born in 1882 in Canada, who lived as of the 1940 census in Winslow, Maine. And perhaps it is Amelia herself at the center of the painting in her red dress and apron, facing toward her house with two faithful chickens at her heels! It is the three of them that really makes this painting for me, making it feel very true in capturing a daily ritual in a specific life at a specific place—and I just bet those two chickens had names, too!

Thickly painted oil on board, sold in the gold painted frame found it in. Very good condition, with one spot of paint loss on the frame, from which it could be removed but which I think suits it pretty nicely. Framed: 23 1/8” x 17”.
