The 12th Armored Division was known as the "Hellcats" during World War II, not the "Mystery Division". The nickname "Hellcats" was officially adopted after a contest held for all division members in 1943. The division served in Europe, playing a significant role in the Allied advance into Germany, crossing the Rhine River and capturing key cities before contributing to the liberation of Landsberg concentration camps near Dachau.
