An elegant English early 19th century Regency period partners desk or library table in mahogany, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster and London.
Circa 1820.
Why we like it
Best reeded legs that we have ever seen on a regency piece, elegant and restrained. Understated and masculine, this versatile cetre table is superbly proportioned to make a functional library table or spacious desk.
With eight frieze drawers and four faux drawers, on turned and reeded tapering legs with brass caps and castors.
The table, with Egyptian reed-wreathed legs, is designed in the early 19th Century 'French antique' fashion promoted by the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d.1832) and popularised by R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1810. This distinctive design was introduced by the Gillows firm in the early 19th century and dominated their production in the 1820s and 1830s.
