Like the West Germans, the French also mount their HOT anti-tank guided missile on helicopters. Improved HOT 2 missiles have been introduced with more effective HEAT warheads. A Patrouille d’helicopteres Antichar (Antitank Helicopter Patrol) consists of up to four SA342M Gazelle helicopters each armed with four powerful Euromissile HOT missiles and a stabilised sight. The pilots of these light helicopters use the terrain to their advantage to get into position before launching their HOT missiles from a well-concealed ambush.

The French Army Light Aviation (ALAT) arm also fields Gazelle helicopters in Attack Helicopter Patrols (Patrouille d’Hélicoptères d’Attaque). These Gazelles are armed with an M621 20mm cannon and provide protection to the anti-tank flights, suppressing enemy anti-aircraft assets.
