Why we like it

Reverse mirror paintings from this period are exceedingly rare, and this particular one is an exquisite example of superb artistic quality, remarkably preserved in its original frame. An absolutely delightful object.

The painting depicts a lady of the upper class observing a romantic pursuits - a rooster courting a chicken. In Chinese art, the rooster and chicken symbolize various aspects such as prosperity, fidelity, and marital bliss. The rooster, as a symbol of the dawn and awakening, represents vigilance and courage. It's often associated with the sun, yang energy, and the element of fire in Chinese cosmology. The chicken symbolises fertility, maternal care, and family harmony. Together, they can also represent the harmony of yin and yang, as well as the balance between masculine and feminine energies.
