Paul Nietsche was a Ukrainian artist and teacher who emigrated to Ireland in 1936. Nietsche studied in both Berlin and Paris, and exhibited at the Paris salon of 1912. He travelled and exhibited extensively throughout Europe and North America and became a British citizen in 1938. From the 1930s until his death in 1950 he became a central figure of the Belfast artistic and literary scenes. His work is included in many private collections and in the permanent collection of the Ullster Museum as well as the National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland.
