A tender and heartfelt thing if I ever did see one. Surely it is Nellie Leora, mother to Gardner (I take that as a G), whose photograph is framed with wreath of braided threads at the center of chair back--captured seated in a Victorian wicker chair, with book open in her hands, and very intense gaze! The rest of the chair seems all about Gardner, who embroidered the date on one side, 1914; her own age on the other, 24; and her name front and center, Gardner B. Jolley, with the "r" in Gardner skipped at first but not forgotten! The seat of the chair opens up, revealing the chair's function as a sewing box--its entire surface inviting use as a pin cushion, and interior with plenty of room for storing bobbins and thread, thimble--and a lucky stone was found stashed in there, too! And then there's a little pocket sewn to the back of the chair too. Wonderfully sincere and teeming with hard-trying labor and love.
8 1/2" t x 6 1/4" w x 5 1/4" d and in very good condition. Toning to the photograph for sure, but not a thread lost, pretty clean, sound and sturdy, totally charming.
