Boxes in this manner are typically described as "dragee" boxes--made to contain French bonbons, or dragee, in the earlyish 19th century. This one, however, has an interior mirror, so perhaps instead was a patch box, or held something else meant for beautifying oneself. A few losses, but pretty amazing to have endured 200 years--perhaps protected by the heavenward pointing gesture one of the men seems to me making! (I'm really not quite sure what the man at left is doing/holding?) Constructed of rigid card with hand-colored transfer printed design beneath the glass top. (These are often described as reverse glass painted; I'm honestly not sure if the coloring is on the glass or print but it definitely has the magical feeling of eglomise.) And the aqua interior, with beautifully distressed silvered mirror bordered in gold paper, feels equally magical.
3 7/16" x 2 7/16" x 7/8". Some losses to the embossed, gold paper trims but overall good condition, stable and sound, with interior especially wonderful.
