English early 19th century Regency period black lacquered (ebonised) tub bergere armchair of Grecian 'Klismos' form, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London,

Circa 1810

Frame caned throughout, with arched top-rail and down swept arms having ball terminals, above a U-shaped seat-rail and brass English rose-headed sabre legs with original brass caps and castors. The seat with a comfortable feather and down filled squab cushion, covered in tan leather. Particularly well-shaped sabre legs and comfortable snug form of the caned back.

This form of chair is known as 'curricle' or carriage-like chair, after the Roman magistrate or consul's seat, by Thomas Sheraton in his Cabinet Dictionary, London, 1803. This name was subsequently adopted by Gillows of London and Lancaster and five chairs of this model, with sphere-capped arms, were supplied by Gillows between 1811 and 1812 to Wilbraham Egerton for Tatton Park, Cheshire (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pl. 16A; and S. Bourne, Gillow Chairs and Fashion, Exhibition Catalogue, Blackburn, 1991, p. 32-33). Another closely related example illustrated in Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. I, pp. 230, pl. 233.

Superb original antique condition, decoration refreshed, canework and brasswork original.
