I think the highlight of July Brimfield for me was digging through a pile of paintings and watercolors by American artists Adelaide Lawson Gaylor (1889-1986) and Wood Gaylor (1883-1957), which has been acquired by the dealer from a one time neighbor of the couple on Long Island. I plucked a handful, signed and unsigned, including this wonderful unsigned portrait, which I love all the more for having been painted atop a horizontal landscape, with row boat visible at lower left, leafy branches along the right edge, and water in between--all of which further animates what already feels like a dreamy sort of portrait. I am not expert enough to definitely say whether this one is the work of Adelaide or Wood Gaylor (whose work shared many qualities)--or perhaps the work of close friend Jules Pascin (who painted the Gaylors and their daughter, and who, along with his wife, was also a subject of the Gaylors--and whose work the Gaylors collected.)  My hunch is this one is by Adelaide, but haven't done a deep enough dive to say for 100 certain; a research project for someone else. Whatever the case, quite a wonderful portrait and painting.
