It's been a long time since the binmen looked like this.
This 'clenny man', and his hairy-hoofed Clydesdale companion, would have begun and ended their day the Cleansing Department stables, in Bell Street, where a clever internal ramp system saw the horses live on top of one another; a multi-storey stable if you like. Today, after lying empty for some years, the stable are being converted into flats - wonder if they'll leave the ramp?
This boy, in his bunnet, dungarees, and tackety boots, had no need of a hi-vis jacket, wheelie bins, or mechanical assistance. With one single movement, he'd pick up and expertly swing the ashcans, emptying their stoorie contents into the back of his wagon.
