Ivy Classic offset aluminum pipe wrenches in 14 in. and 18 in. The offset head — jaws angled relative to the handle — lets you swing the wrench in tight spaces where a straight pipe wrench can't get knuckle clearance: against a wall, in a joist bay, under a vanity, or close to another fitting. Drop-forged aluminum body keeps the wrench light overhead; same hardened Cr-Mo steel jaws as the straight aluminum series.

What You Get

  • Offset jaw geometry — the jaws sit at an angle to the handle, letting you turn the wrench through more of an arc before the handle hits an obstruction. Critical when working close to walls, joists, or adjacent plumbing
  • Drop-forged aluminum body — embossed “ALUMINUM IVY Classic” on the handle. Roughly 40% lighter than an equivalent cast-iron pipe wrench, matters when you're swinging at height or in a crawlspace
  • Cr-Mo (chrome molybdenum) steel jaws — same hardened jaw alloy as the straight pipe wrench series. Aggressive serrated teeth, heat-treated for repeated bite-and-release cycles
  • Spring-suspended top jaw — pulls the wrench down into a self-energizing bite on each turn; release pressure to reposition without unscrewing the nut
  • Heat-treated thumbwheel nut — adjusts jaw spread smoothly under load; doesn't slip when the wrench is under torque
  • Hang hole at the handle end — molded into both sizes for tool-board, peg-hook, or lanyard storage
  • ANSI-spec performance — conforms to ASME B107.310 dimensional and proof-load requirements

Sizes — What Each One Is For

  • 14 in. Aluminum (Model 19036, SKU 29061-01) — up to 2 in. nominal capacity. The mid-size offset for tight residential plumbing: vanity drains, under-sink supplies, water-heater unions, washing-machine valves, water-softener bypass loops. Drop-forged aluminum body around 3 lb — about half the weight of a 14 in. cast-iron straight pipe wrench.
  • 18 in. Aluminum (Model 19037, SKU 29061) — up to 2-1/2 in. nominal capacity. The big offset for mainline work in crowded mechanical rooms: boiler-room manifolds, well-tank cross-connections, pump bypass loops, irrigation backflow assemblies. Aluminum body keeps it overhead-friendly even at 18 in.

When to Reach for the Offset Over a Straight

  • Against a wall: the straight wrench's handle would hit the wall before completing the turn. The offset's angled head lets the handle swing free.
  • In a joist bay or crawlspace: overhead pipes near floor joists or in tight crawlspace clearance — the offset gives you a turning arc the straight can't.
  • Against adjacent fittings: a tee or elbow right next to the joint you're working on. The offset clears it; the straight's jaw would slam into the adjacent fitting.
  • Behind a fixture: reach behind a toilet or vanity to turn a supply stop without removing the fixture.

If you have clear swing space in all directions, the straight pipe wrench is faster and easier to set. The offset is a specialty tool for the tight spots straight wrenches can't reach.

Use Notes

Plan the swing arc before you set the jaws. The offset gives you more clearance than a straight wrench, but it's not infinite — eyeball the handle's path before locking on the pipe. If the swing won't complete, reposition the wrench 180° (flip the offset direction) and try again.

Adjust the jaw spread loose, then tight. Set the thumbwheel so the top and bottom jaws meet the pipe slightly open, then snug down. A pipe wrench grips by biting in — the spring-suspended top jaw walks the bite into the pipe as you turn.

Pull, don't push. Pipe wrenches are designed to bite on the pull stroke (when the user pulls the handle toward themselves with the spring-loaded jaw oriented up). Pushing reverses the bite mechanics and risks the jaw skating.

Don't use a pipe wrench on chrome / brass / soft-finish fittings. The serrated jaws will mark the finish. Use a strap wrench or padded jaws for finished plumbing.

Don't use a pipe extension (“cheater bar”) on the handle. Aluminum-bodied wrenches especially — the body is lighter than cast iron and will fail at the body before the joint breaks loose if you double the handle length. If the joint won't move with the wrench's native handle, go up a size.

What’s in the Box

  • One Ivy Classic offset aluminum pipe wrench in your selected size, with original Ivy Classic hangtag

Compatible Accessories — Sold Separately

  • PTFE thread tape (white standard, pink heavy-duty) for any threaded joint being assembled
  • Pipe joint compound for threads that don't seal cleanly with tape alone
  • Strap wrench for chrome / brass / finished plumbing where serrated jaws would mark the surface
  • Ivy Classic straight pipe wrenches (steel 8 / 10 / 14 in.; aluminum 18 / 24 in.) for open-space pipe work where the offset isn't needed
  • Basin wrench for sink-supply nuts behind faucets (where neither straight nor offset pipe wrenches fit)
