On July 17th, 1951 the prototype Hawker Hunter made its maiden flight. In 1954 it entered service with the RAF. It was exported by Hawker Siddely and under license. The Hawker Hunter served in the air forces of 19 different countries.
The Dutch air force used them between 1955 and 1968 with the versions F.Mk.4, F.Mk.6 and TMK.7. They were superseded by the Lockheed F-104G Starfighter.
