A beautiful early 19th Century polychrome winged cherubim, or angel, holding a guitar or mandolin. This angel would have most probably hung in a church.
The angel is carved and gessoed with white overpaint, gilding, and glass inset eyes.
Most probably Italian, but could also be Spanish or Portuguese.
This angel has an incredible dimensionality and weathered patina.
Some cracks, notably around the arms, and losses to the gilding and paint. Currently affixed to the wall with a picture hanging wire.
Very fragile but absolutely stunning, and structurally fine as long as it is hung with care.
