Celebrate the courage and sacrifice of Vietnam Door Gunners with this premium apparel featuring air assault and Vietnam service ribbons. A powerful tribute to the Army aviation combat veterans who flew into battle aboard helicopters—the warriors who manned machine guns in the open doors of Hueys, providing suppressive fire during air assaults, protecting their aircraft and fellow soldiers while facing enemy fire from the most exposed position on the helicopter.
A door gunner is a crewman tasked with firing and maintaining manually directed armament aboard a military helicopter. The actual role will vary depending on the task given on a particular mission. For certain aircraft a door gunner would use a fully automatic Gatling gun placement. On many larger aircraft such as military planes a turret is used along with heavy cannons.
In Vietnam, door gunners flew aboard UH-1 "Huey" helicopters, manning M60 machine guns mounted in the open doors of the aircraft. They sat in the doorway, strapped in by a safety harness, completely exposed to enemy fire from below. Door gunners provided suppressive fire during air assaults, engaged enemy forces on the ground, and protected their aircraft from enemy troops trying to shoot down the helicopter.
Door gunners were critical to the success of air assault operations in Vietnam. When helicopters approached landing zones to insert infantry troops, door gunners laid down suppressive fire on tree lines and suspected enemy positions, keeping enemy heads down while troops jumped from the aircraft. During extraction missions, door gunners provided covering fire as troops boarded the helicopter under enemy fire.
The job of door gunner was one of the most dangerous in Vietnam. Door gunners were completely exposed to enemy fire, sitting in the open door with nothing but a safety harness between them and a fall from hundreds of feet. They faced enemy small arms fire, machine guns, and anti-aircraft weapons on every mission. Many door gunners were wounded or killed in action, and their courage under fire saved countless lives.
Door gunners had to maintain their composure and continue firing while their helicopter took enemy fire, while watching tracers fly past them, and while seeing fellow soldiers wounded or killed. They had to clear jammed weapons, change ammunition belts, and continue fighting in the most stressful conditions imaginable. Their accuracy and volume of fire often made the difference between a successful mission and disaster.
Door gunners earned numerous Distinguished Flying Crosses, Air Medals, and Purple Hearts for their service in Vietnam. They flew thousands of combat missions, engaged enemy forces in countless firefights, and demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of enemy fire. The door gunners of Vietnam are remembered as some of the bravest warriors of the war.
Whether you served as a door gunner in Vietnam, flew on air assault missions, or appreciate the courage of these aviation combat veterans, this apparel represents valor, sacrifice, and the proud legacy of Vietnam door gunners.
