Issued by France in 1974, this 0.40 franc commemorative stamp celebrates the tricentenaire (300th anniversary) of the founding of the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris. Designed by Claude Jumelet and engraved by Georges Béquet, the stamp depicts a detailed architectural rendering of the building’s façade and a medallion featuring its layout and the Latin inscription “Militibus senio aut vulnere invalidis” (“For soldiers disabled by age or wounds”). Established in 1675 by Louis XIV, the Hôtel des Invalides remains a symbol of France’s military history and compassion toward its veterans.
