Erwin Bohatsch (*1951) was one of the leading painters of the “Neue Wilden” (New Wild Ones) in Austria in the 1980s, who, as a counter-movement to the conceptual art of the 1970s, brought the aesthetic phenomenon of painting to a new level. In a reflection of the first modernism, his themes were determined by his interest in ethnographic research approaches and the theories of Claude Lévi-Strauss. Since the 1990s, Bohatsch has increasingly devoted himself to the second abstraction, Colorfield Painting. With his technique of applying bands of colour in almost monochrome paintings, partially sealing layers of the picture and then painting over them with veils and streaks, he concentrates attention on colour and light, the defining aspects of painting. This publication opens up the artist’s methodology with well-founded texts and a broad selection of recent paintings - together with central works from the 1980s.
